I first met this little buddy at the end of September 2025. On the day I got the keys to my new
  • 05
house, I spotted a grey cat casually jumping onto the roof. At
  • 06
the time, I assumed it was just one of the neighbours' cats passing through.
  • 07
But ever since I moved in, this cat has been showing up in my backyard almost every single day,
  • 08
happily chilling out as if it owns the place. Based on its rough coat and the fact that it sometimes
  • 09
looks quite dirty, I've always suspected it might be a stray. It was also incredibly wary of
  • 10
people. The moment it noticed a human, it would become hyper- alert, and if you so much as took
  • 11
a step towards it, it would immediately sprint away-no matter how slowly or carefully you approached.
  • 12
A couple of days ago, Melbourne's winter weather officially arrived and the temperature dropped noticeably.
  • 13
I figured I'd leave some food outside and see if it was interested. At the very least, it
  • 14
could use the extra calories to help get through the colder months.
  • 15
When I got home from work that evening, the bowl was completely empty and licked spotless.
  • 16
Curious, I checked the security camera footage and discovered the mystery guest was Greyie!
  • 17
From that point on, I started leaving food out for him every day.
  • 18
Tonight, though, I decided to be a little more adventurous.
  • 19
Around 7pm, I spotted Greyie hiding in the darkness, quietly watching me through the window
  • 20
while I was doing the dishes. I turned on the backyard lights, prepared some food and fresh
  • 21
water, then deliberately went back inside and closed the window so he would feel safe and know his boundaries were being respected.
  • 22
Slowly, he approached the bowl and immediately dug in. I sat on the other side of the glass, only
  • 23
about a foot away, staying low and keeping myself at roughly the same eye level so I wouldn't appear threatening. He absolutely
  • 24
demolished the meal. Afterwards, he sat down gracefully, and the two of us just stared at each other for about ten minutes.
  • 25
Feeling like his guard had finally dropped a little, I brought out a small can of salmon and tuna wet
  • 26
food, cracked the door open, and watched him enjoy his second dinner. I have to admit, there was
  • 27
something incredibly satisfying about hearing him happily crunching and chewing away.
  • 28
Then came the moment I never expected.
  • 29
I gently reached out and gave him a little pat on the head. To my surprise, he didn't run. In fact, he seemed completely
  • 30
comfortable. I continued stroking his head and body, and before long he started rubbing against
  • 31
my legs and giving me little head bumps as if we'd known each other for years.
  • 32
Afterwards, I showed him the temporary shelter I'd made-a simple styrofoam esky bed—and
  • 33
told him that if it rains or gets cold, he's welcome to sleep there. Somehow, it genuinely felt like he
  • 34
understood. He sat down nearby and spent the next ten minutes calmly grooming himself.
  • 35
Unfortunately, the evening's peaceful atmosphere came to an abrupt end when my neighbour
  • 36
started a karaoke session and Greyie vanished into the night. No complaints though-they're lovely neighbours.
  • 37
Still, tonight felt like a major breakthrough between Greyie and me. From a cat that used to
  • 38
bolt the second I moved, to one that happily ate beside me, accepted pats, and head-bumped my legs-it honestly felt pretty special.
  • 39
Safe to say, Greyie has officially become part of the neighbourhood, and I couldn't be happier.
